Background of the Study
Igbo live broadcasts in Enugu have increasingly incorporated code-switching—the alternation between Igbo and English—to meet the linguistic needs of diverse audiences. This practice influences discourse cohesion by bridging linguistic gaps, adding layers of meaning, and engaging viewers from different language backgrounds (Nwachukwu, 2023). Live broadcasts, which include news, entertainment, and public debates, rely on smooth transitions between languages to maintain clarity and continuity. Code-switching serves as a strategic tool that can enhance the persuasive power of the discourse by providing contextual nuances and cultural resonance (Okoro, 2024). However, its impact on overall coherence remains a subject of debate among communication scholars. This study evaluates how code-switching in Igbo live broadcasts affects discourse cohesion by analyzing language patterns, audience responses, and contextual factors. Through a detailed examination of live broadcast recordings and viewer feedback, the research aims to uncover the mechanisms by which code-switching either reinforces or disrupts narrative flow in real-time communication (Nwachukwu, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite its widespread use, the effects of code-switching on discourse cohesion in Igbo live broadcasts are not well understood. Existing research often generalizes code-switching as a beneficial or disruptive phenomenon without a detailed investigation into its contextual impacts (Okoro, 2024). This gap in empirical evidence hinders the development of effective broadcast strategies that optimize language use for audience engagement and clarity. The study seeks to address these deficiencies by systematically analyzing code-switching patterns and their impact on the coherence of live broadcast discourse, thereby providing a nuanced understanding of its role in modern media communication.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify code-switching patterns in Igbo live broadcasts.

  2. To analyze their effect on discourse cohesion.

  3. To recommend strategies for optimizing language transitions in live media.

Research Questions

  1. What are the common code-switching patterns in Igbo live broadcasts?

  2. How do these patterns influence discourse cohesion?

  3. What strategies can mitigate potential disruptions?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the complex role of code-switching in enhancing or undermining discourse cohesion in live broadcasts. The findings will aid broadcasters, communication experts, and media scholars in developing strategies that leverage bilingual practices to improve audience comprehension and engagement (Nwachukwu, 2023; Okoro, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to Igbo live broadcasts in Enugu and does not extend to pre-recorded media or other language pairings.

Definitions of Terms
